WaPo:
Occupy D.C. hunger strikers, frail but undaunted
“Cocooned in sleeping bags on the cold floor of St. Stephen’s Church in Columbia Heights, the hunger strikers dozed under a painting of Jesus Christ bearing a loaf of bread. They woke now and then to flick through their Twitter feeds in search of solidarity, looking for the hashtag #OccupytheVoteDC, wondering whether anyone would join their bodily protest of the District’s taxation without representation.” [emphasis mine]

Taking Back the Capitol (Which Now Lives On K St)
“Take Back the Capitol protesters are marching on K Street’s lobbying firms today, and not a moment too soon: A new report by Public Campaign finds that 30 big corporations spent more money lobbying than they did in taxes between 2008 and 2010. Take the fabulously profitable General Electric (please). They got a tax rebate of $4.7 billion, and spent $84 million lobbying the federal government. Protest updates here and here.“

Politicus; Dispelling the Myths Surrounding OccupyDC
“Another myth that must be dispensed with, based on what I have seen with my own eyes, is the notion that this is organized by the Democratic Party, of the Democratic Party and for the Democratic Party. The people I spoke to were strictly non-partisan. If you asked them about the president or the Democrats, they would respond with hostility that is only surpassed by reference to the Republicans or the Tea Party.”
“When I asked one elderly gentleman what he thought of ‘all this’ he was delighted. He went on to tell me about the reality that cuts in Social Security meant he would have to choose between his medication and having a home. He is part of the 99%. He doesn’t claim to represent the 99%, only that he is part of them, part of that 99% that has no voice in Washington. He voted for Obama, but now sees him as part of the corporate machine. He has lost faith in corporate Washington, D.C. Forget Congress, forget the president. This man wants the people to make the decisions. Get rid of the corporate influence and maybe we’ll talk.”

“(A)fterwards, Medea Benjamin said to the assemblage of protesters, ‘We shut down the chamber of commerce and totally, peacefully broke the police line. This is one example of how a non-violent movement works.’ ” [emphasis mine]

2 grandmothers WALKING 200 miles to Occupy DC “Because we are 56 and 57 year old grandmothers and are underemployed, uninsured cancer survivors, we hope our walk will create a media buzz along the route that will help get the word out about both of these events.”

OCTOBER2011/STOPTHEWARMACHINE events
TPM: Anti-War Protesters Storm Senate’s Hart Office Building “Members of the anti-war Stop the Machine and October 11 movement attempted to take over the atrium of the Senate Hart Office Building on Tuesday, chanting ‘we are the 99 percent’ and ‘end all wars’ before Capitol Police cleared the area and made a handful of arrests.”
“Stop the Machine and October 2011 protesters were the chief organizers, but were joined by people who said they came to town for the Occupy D.C. protest. Some of the chants also took on the branding of the ‘Occupy’ movement, including chants about taxing the rich.”
